as someone who enjoys all aspects of the internet life, i've of course garnered an interest in old, 00s-10s computer viruses. i love viruses! not when they're on my computer clogging up my cpu, but observing the scene, the fruits of thousands of enthusiasts' labor, ranging from utterly destructive (cih, mydoom, iloveyou, melissa, magistr) to the artistic (spanska, walker, lichen, techno, meltingscreen), to just completely silly (beauty, magold, alerta, pro-alife, joshi, dumb, jesus, ethan, malantern), and sometimes a combination of the three (hold,. on a lesser scale, i'm also really intrigued with ransomware (petya, wannacry...). just a bunch of nerds that enjoyed pushing the limits of the computer. who'd have thought that viruses nowadays can be deployed as legitimate weapons in warfare? honestly, i wouldn't have imagined that either. viruses of the old days that breached containment had a major part to play in the evolution of antivirus programs, as well as changing the nature of companies in the IT industry. ever wonder why your computer and every program on there needs constant updates now? thank viruses!

anyway, this is just going to be a little place where i talk about funny and interesting viruses, as well as modern day viruses and what they're being used for. i'm not a ~professional~ researcher or anything, just an amateur hobbyist. if you want to learn more about these things, danooct1, who has an extensive catalogue of (old) virus showcases. for more modern virus stuff, check out these databases, and have fun looking at the wonderful land of viruses!
